How to Keep Your Bonica Rose Plant Beautiful
The Bonica Rose bush is one of the most popular rose plants for home gardeners and landscapers due to the fact that it is fairly easy to care for and tends to be resistant to disease. Depending on the climate that you live in, this rose bush can grow to a height of anywhere from 4 to 8 feet tall. Not only does the Bonica Rose bush grow fairly big, but also it will continue to produce beautiful pink roses all season long, from the first warmth of spring until the first frost.
To keep your Bonica Rose Bush looking as good as possible will take some attention to keeping it healthy and trimmed. Pruning this plant isn’t too difficult, and as long as you take some time to do it correctly, you’ll have a lovely bush all year long.
- The first step in trimming the Bonica Rose Bush is to ensure that you have sharp tools. If you use dull trimming tools you could tear the stems when you try and trim them. This will damage the bush. For this reason it is important that you make sure that you sharpen your garden and loping shears.
- Another important step to trimming the Bonica Rose Bush is to make sure that you are cutting at the right angle. Always hold your shears so that you are cutting at a 45-degree angle, away from the inside of the bush. When you trim in this way, you will be helping to open the inside of the bush, which helps to reduce disease.
- Next you will want to cut of any dead canes. These will appear to be dry, and dark so they should not be too difficult to spot. You will also need to cut all of the sucker canes from the bush. To do this gently move the soil from the base of the plant and cut them as close to the roots as possible, without damaging the bush.
- When cutting the canes you will want to remove all of the oldest canes. To do this cut back about one third of the canes, leaving at least four or five healthy canes.
- Now you will need to start trimming the rose stems. All rose stems that are not at least as thick as a pencil should be trimmed away from the Bonica Rose Bush. You will also want to trim off any of the leaves that are left on the bush from last season. These will be dry or withered and easy to spot in most cases.
-
When you have finished trimming your Bonica Rose Bush you will want to cleanup all of the trimmings and debris from around the bush. It is better if you dispose of the trimmings as apposed to turning them into compost. This will only provide a place for insects and disease to breed.
- Watering your Bonica Rose Bush is an important step in keeping your bush looking great. You will want to water at least once a week. It is best to water roses in the early morning hours so that you can reduce the chance of scorching the bush due to heat and sun.
- Feed your Bonica Rose Bush at least once a month. There are a variety of different fertilizers that you can use for your rose bushes; simply follow the manufacturers directions when feeding your plants.
There is no doubt that the Bonica Rose Bush can be a wonderful addition to your flower garden; they are generally easy to care for and produce beautiful flowers nearly all year long.
