Drying Roses
Advice On Drying Roses
If you have a rose from a special occasion that you would like to keep, you can learn about drying roses. We get roses during memorable times in our lives and we want to hold on to those memories with a memento. The problem is that roses are beautiful fragrant blooms until they start to die. But instead of throwing them out, you can learn a few ways of drying roses so that you can keep them as a keepsake for as long as you would like to.
It is easy to preserve the nice look of a fresh rose. It costs nearly nothing and it isn’t time consuming. There are 2 ways to preserve your favorite roses and keep them forever and they are either air or sand drying.
Air drying roses has to be done in an area with little or no moisture. You can dry them in a small closet or basement area. Just make sure they can be in this place undisturbed for a full 3 to 4 weeks to allow the roses to completely dry.
You can use a smaller, flexible piece of wire to hold all of your separate roses. You will also need a bar or hangers to tie the wire onto after you have assembled the roses. Take the flower with the stem that you will be using and cut it around a half an inch away from the rose bud. Remove any leaves that are left on the bottom of the rose. Take the end of the wire and insert it into the center of the rose. You will need to hang the roses upside down. It sometimes helps to bend the end of the wire a bit, so that it can hold the rose more securely. Attach the wire to the hanger and repeat this process again if you want to dry more roses. Make sure that they are spaced far enough apart that they do not touch each other. This can cause discoloration and the drying roses will not completely dry out. From time to time you can check on the drying process. Normally it can take around 3 weeks for the roses to thoroughly dry.
If you want to save the stem as well as the rose, you can. Place them in the same quiet, dry areas and you can also use a wire and hanger to hang them up. Take the stem and the rose and remove all of the leaves remaining on the stems. This includes leaves that are close to the top of the rose. Snip off the bottom of the stem and hang the plant upside down. Wrap the wire around the bottom of the stem securely and hang the rose up. With the rose stem and the rose, it might take a bit longer to completely air dry the bloom.
You can maintain the shape of the rose by using sand for drying roses. Take the flower with the stem and clip it off around an inch away from the bloom. Attach a wire into the center of the bloom and place the flower in a box half way filled with white sand. Slowly start to add the sand around each petal. Cover the bloom completely and place the box in a dry area for around 3 weeks. When you remove the dried flower, be careful not to lose any petals. Slowly empty the sand from the box and keep your hand over the rose.
If you do not mind if the shape of the flower is changed, you can always place a bloom between the pages of a book. Make sure that the flower isn’t wet or moist before placing it there and leave it in the book for a full 2 weeks.
